Vital diabetes resources needed for charity trip to Ghana

The diabetes community are being urged to donate crucial supplies to health teams in Ghana and Kenya.

Senior Diabetes Specialist Nurse, Anna Vanderpuye is encouraging people to donate unused blood glucose monitors, HbA1c monitors, strips, lipids monitors and their consumables.

To mark World Diabetes Day, Anna will be holding educational and screening campaigns in Ghana to improve diabetes care in the country.

Educational webinars will also take place to inform both people with diabetes and members of the public on diabetes prevention and diabetes management.

Alongside her clinical role, Anna is the Founder of the Diabetes Outreach Prevention Programmes International (DOPPSI) – an organisation dedicated to provide education on prevention, early diagnosis and access to treatment of diabetes in the UK and worldwide.

According to DOPPSI, its volunteers in Kenya will be running the same programmes to mark World Diabetes Day, which is observed on November 14.

Anna said: “Our targets are mostly rural areas and a number of urban areas. DOPPSI is kindly calling on all industries, especially the diabetes sector and other charities, to share resources, and collectively work towards reducing the global diabetes footprint.

“DOPPSI understands the impact of diabetes being left unchecked. We are therefore formulating strategies to combat its rise and ensuring a healthier future for all.”

She added: “Our aim is not just to be amongst the best diabetes charities but to be at the grass roots where people have no help or support.

“Stand with us, join hands with us and our hardworking volunteers, working in the most remote areas of the world to bring empowering global health and diabetes prevention.”

World Diabetes Day 2024 aims to highlight the repercussions of unchecked diabetes on global health. The theme of this year’s campaign is ‘Empowering Global Health’.
