Diabetes and genes at forefront of new podcast

Aspects of genetics in diabetes will be under the spotlight of a new podcast launched by two diabetes experts.

Healthcare professionals can now learn about the unusual genetic forms of diabetes thanks to the new podcast series hosted by Professor Andrew Hattersley and Professor Maggie Shepherd.

The new podcast – One in Six Billion – will explore different case studies of people impacted by monogenic diabetes.

Monogenic diabetes is a condition caused by a mutation in a single gene which is passed on from an affected parent to their child.

Episode one saw Emma Matthews speak about her son Jack who was diagnosed with diabetes when he was two weeks old. His life changed when a genetic cause was found for his diabetes.

Professor Hattersley and Professor Shepherd are both from the University of Exeter. They are both involved in setting up the genetics of diabetes research and diagnostic service in the city. The service has now received samples from 111 different countries.
