Bariatric surgery associated with good health outcomes among people with type 2 diabetes

Metabolic surgery improves the general health and physical functioning of people living with type 2 diabetes and obesity, latest research has demonstrated.

Academics have suggested that weight loss surgery is more beneficial for individuals with type 2 diabetes and obesity than standard lifestyle interventions.

A total of 228 people took part in the study, all of whom had type 2 diabetes and obesity. The participants were randomly assigned to either have bariatric surgery or join a lifestyle intervention.

The researchers have revealed that the paritcipant’s physical component score improved significantly more in those in the bariatric surgery group versus those in the lifestyle intervention group over 12 years.

Bariatric surgery was associated with better general health, physical functioning, and vitality. Reduction in BMI was greater after bariatric surgery versus a lifestyle intervention and correlated with an improved physical component score.

Improvements in health utility were greater in the participants in the bariatric surgery group versus those in the lifestyle intervention group over 12 years.
