General practice in the spotlight at the Diabetes Professional Care conference

Several renowned general practitioners are set to explore the latest innovations in diabetes care at this year’s highly regarded Diabetes Professional Care conference.

Delegates visiting the free-to-attend event will have the opportunity to hear the latest on hot topics in diabetes care, with a number of talks dedicated to general practice.

GPs are now being encouraged to register for the conference, which is being held at Olympia London on Wednesday, November 16, and Thursday, November 17.

The major two-day event is an “unmissable opportunity” for GPs to network, share their experiences and discuss best practice.

Among the high-profile GPs speaking at this year’s conference are Dr David Unwin, from Northwood Surgery in Southport, and Dr Jim Moore, President of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society.

Joining them will be Dr Kevin Fernando, a partner of North Berwick Health Centre with a special interest in diabetes, and Martin Harris, from Temple Fortune Health Centre.

Dr Unwin will be championing the benefits of a low carb diet during his session at the national diabetes conference. More than 20 per cent of Dr Unwin’s patients with type 2 diabetes are drug free and in remission.

He said: “We know there are more than one million people in England alone with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes and for every year someone has poorly controlled diabetes they lose 100 days of life.

“The good news is there is a window of opportunity for people when they are first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.”

He added: “At our practice, 76 per cent of people who chose to go low carb within the first year of being diagnosed achieve remission.

“If we can replicate that across the country, we’ll sort three quarters of the problem with very little cost and no drugs.”

Event Director Andy Buchanan said: “It is vital for GPs to attend in-person conferences as it provides them with an unmissable opportunity to network with some of the leading figures in their specialist care area.

“At this year’s conference we will be hosting hand-on workshops and interactive sessions to increase interaction between the delegates and speakers.”

The conference programme is now available to view online. The sessions hosted by a GP include:

  • Fasting and diabetes
  • SGLT2 inhibition in people with heart failure – what does the evidence tell us?
  • NASH / NAFLD and the management of abnormal liver function tests
  • What predicts drug free remission and how best to maintain it in clinical practice?
  • CaReMe case studies: practical guidance for more complex cases

The Diabetes Professional Care conference is the must attend event for professionals working in the diabetes healthcare community, presenting an unrivalled chance to gain real-world learning from top practitioners and develop knowledge – all under one roof and with the objective of improving care and making a real difference to the lives of people living with diabetes and related conditions.

The national conference, which has a strong reputation for providing accessible education to healthcare professionals and has attracted thousands of visitors over the past eight years, is free to attend, CPD certified and open to any healthcare professional involved in the prevention, treatment and management of diabetes and its related conditions.
