Diabetes UK and Kidney Research UK launch new bite-sized e-learning module

A new mini e-learning module to help healthcare professionals improve kidney health for people living with diabetes has been launched by Diabetes UK.

Created in collaboration with Kidney Research UK, the free, online 20-minute module marks the start of Diabetes UK’s new bite-sized e-learning series.

The series is designed to deliver convenient learning that fits easily into the working day, and the new module can be found on Diabetes UK’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) platform.

Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney failure, and one in three people with diabetes develop chronic kidney disease (CKD).

The Kidney Health mini-module will support healthcare professionals in understanding the risk of CKD in people with diabetes and offer advice on how they can best support people with diabetes to make changes to reduce their risk.

By completing the module, healthcare professionals should be able to:

  • Explain the risk of kidney disease for people living with diabetes
  • Understand the importance of early detection
  • Monitor kidney health and know how to test kidney function
  • Support someone with diabetes to maintain their kidney health.

The Kidney Health mini-module is the first in Diabetes UK’s new Diabetes Complications Collection – a series of short e-learning modules.

A follow-up Kidney Disease module, also co-created with Kidney Research UK, will be available later this year.

Healthcare professionals can access the module free of charge at cpd.diabetes.org.uk/kidney-health.

Katie Bareford, Senior Clinical Advisor for Diabetes UK, said: We’re proud to be collaborating with Kidney Research UK on the Kidney Health CPD module, kicking off our series of mini-modules that will raise awareness of diabetes-related complications among healthcare professionals.

Diabetes-related complications, such as chronic kidney disease, can be devastating – but they are not inevitable.”

She added: “This module will equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and confidence to talk to people with diabetes about their kidney health, as they help them take steps to reduce their risk of CKD.”

Swati Bhagat-Jones, lead for multiple long-term conditions of Kidney Research UK, said:Kidney disease is fast becoming a public health emergency, driven in large part by the growing numbers of people with diabetes.

“Without significant intervention, the number of people in need of dialysis threatens to overwhelm the NHS. Therefore, this welcome collaboration with Diabetes UK comes at a vital time, helping empower more primary care health professionals to act as a first line of defence.

“By improving and refreshing knowledge and awareness within primary care, CKD patients can be identified earlier and managed before it progresses irreversibly.”
