Recommendations included in the American Diabetes Association’s 2025 Standards of Carefocus on enhancing diabetes management through expanded use of continuous glucose monitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists.
In addition, the report also addresses medication shortages and promotes water consumption over sweetened beverages.
The ADA’s Dr Mandeep Bajaj said: “The standards incorporate the latest information from clinical trial data and knowledge of diabetes management into a comprehensive guidelines document to help clinicians.”
Dr Bajaj highlighted some of the most important clinical updates, including the following:
- Consideration of the use of continuous glucose monitoring devices in adults with type 2 diabetes who don’t use insulin
- Actions to be taken in the event of medication shortages
- Use of GLP-1 RAs for heart and kidney health
- Treatment of MAFLD with moderate or advanced liver fibrosis
- Advice to continue weight management therapy beyond achieving weight loss goals
- Antibody-based screening for presymptomatic type 1 diabetes in family members of people with type 2 diabetes and others who may be at risk
- Screen for psychosocial issues
- Drink water, not soda.
