ADA releases 2025 Standards of Care for diabetes

Recommendations included in the American Diabetes Association’s 2025 Standards of Carefocus on enhancing diabetes management through expanded use of continuous glucose monitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists.

In addition, the report also addresses medication shortages and promotes water consumption over sweetened beverages.

The ADA’s Dr Mandeep Bajaj said: “The standards incorporate the latest information from clinical trial data and knowledge of diabetes management into a comprehensive guidelines document to help clinicians.”

Dr Bajaj highlighted some of the most important clinical updates, including the following:

  • Consideration of the use of continuous glucose monitoring devices in adults with type 2 diabetes who don’t use insulin
  • Actions to be taken in the event of medication shortages
  • Use of GLP-1 RAs for heart and kidney health
  • Treatment of MAFLD with moderate or advanced liver fibrosis
  • Advice to continue weight management therapy beyond achieving weight loss goals
  • Antibody-based screening for presymptomatic type 1 diabetes in family members of people with type 2 diabetes and others who may be at risk
  • Screen for psychosocial issues
  • Drink water, not soda.
