Renal failure associated with increased risk of diabetic foot ulcers, evidence finds

People living with renal failure are more at risk of developing diabetic foot ulcers, according to an expert who spoke at the Trend Diabetes National Conference 2024 last week. 

During her session, Professor Fran Game highlighted that people on dialysis are more likely to be diagnosed with a diabetic foot ulcer due to blood being pumped away from the feet and sitting down for long periods of time.

In addition, she revealed that people living with diabetic foot ulcers are more at risk of experiencing cognitive impairment and poor health literacy.

Professor Game also revealed that people living with diabetic foot ulcers are at an increased risk of death.

Each year, 6,000 people have an amputation, with diabetic foot disease costing the NHS £1 billion per annum.
