UK’s obesity ‘ticking time bomb’ to be addressed at new congress

A nationwide conference will be held in May to help healthcare professionals tackle the obesity challenge facing the UK.

Registrations for the inaugural Obesity Alliance conference have opened today – during National Obesity Awareness Week – for the event which will give UK healthcare professionals access to free CPD-accredited education from leading experts in the field.

The event will be chaired by Professor Melanie Davies CBE, a Professor of Diabetes Medicine at the University of Leicester and an Honorary Consultant Diabetologist at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. Professor Davies is Co-Director of the Leicester Diabetes Centre and has published more than 900 original articles.

The conference, organised by Orange Juice Communications, will take place at National Conference Centre Birmingham on Friday, May 17.

Event manager Emily Mayhew said: “A recent study by Cancer Research UK revealed the number of people who are obese could overtake the number who are of a healthy weight in the UK by 2040.

“This obesity ticking time bomb is putting added pressure on healthcare staff and resources across primary and secondary care.

“To combat this, Obesity Alliance is hosting a nationwide conference to help healthcare professionals expand their knowledge and skillset by taking advantage of free education from the UK’s leading experts in the field, including Professor Melanie Davies.

“By attending this conference, professionals will stay at the forefront of industry advancements, contribute to their own professional development and have the chance to network with peers and organisations who share their passion for healthcare innovation.”

Obesity Alliance 2024 will feature sessions on a wide range of topics, including the causes and consequences of obesity, weight loss and weight loss maintenance, the impact of obesity on pregnancy outcomes, type 2 diabetes and pharmacotherapy.
